Il Gatto Nero

Via Daily Deal Tips
Il Gatto Nero (*** out of 5)
720 College St
Toronto, ON M6G 1C4
(416) 536-3132

This is a Neapolitan bar whose roots go way back to the 60s, albeit at a location down the street, which was smoke-filled and more of a social club. My uncles used to hang out there when they moved to Canada and I lived across the street from the current location for 3 years.

The place serves the best cappuccino in the city, in my humble opinion. Prove me wrong anyone.

I'm also partial to the Campagnolo spinelli (a kind of thick, doughy wrap, filled with mozzarella, prosciutto, onions & bocconcini----served with a light salad side w. olives) as well as the Antonietta and Pastore pizzas.

Not the most impressive Italian food you'll come across by any means, but cheap and what the place lacks in exciting food it makes up for in atmosphere. The tree-lined patio on the west side is perfect for passing the time with friends over pitchers (the front patio's OK too)

As an aside, Il Gatto Nero, otherwise known as "The Cat" is a kind of  headquarters for AC Milan soccer club supporters. It's a great place to watch any football match be it Champions League, the Scudetto or of course, the World Cup, where people will stand around the patio and news outlets will come by for streeters.

The breakfasts are limited: vanilla or chocolate biscotti in a big glass jar.

Vienna Fine Foods

Lovely Scarborough
Vienna Fine Foods(*** out of 5)

Scarborough, ON M1K 1S4

Family-run Austrian joint in Scarborough has lots of delicious chocolates, cheeses, herring and meats.

There is a deli counter at the back that serves up "rouladen" (bacon, onions, mustard and pickles wrapped in beef----not as good as my Oma makes it but pretty good) as well as schnitzels, cordon bleu, potato salad, and the usual pickled Euro fare.

Wide assortment of German jams and chocolates.
